It is always fun when The Omega Strain travels somewhere before I do. This time it has landed in Germany.
German gaming publication Spielemagazin has published a substantial preview ahead of the November 2 release. The article places the game firmly in the tradition of Zarch and Virus: physics-based flight where thrust, tilt, gravity and drift all matter—and where the ground remains a surprisingly committed opponent.
The feature also spends time on RetroMesh, the custom 3D engine built alongside the game. It describes how the engine supports the clean polygon aesthetic while keeping the action readable when ships, projectiles and debris begin filling the screen.
Eight explorable worlds, demanding arcade combat and the original soundtrack by Swedish electronic artist 047 all receive a mention. Seeing those pieces understood together is especially satisfying: The Omega Strain is not retro because it forgot what year it is. It is retro because those early 3D games still had unfinished business.
“The Omega Strain: Retro-Arcade-Shooter erscheint am 2. November.” The full article is available in German at Spielemagazin.
